Mystery Red and White Black Sea Specimen - Possible Fern Fossil

Mystery Red and White Black Sea Specimen

8cm

This is a very unusual specimen and in spite of asking around a bit, we still have very little idea what it is. It is very possible that it is yet another kind of agatised or spherulitic rhyolite - thunderegg conglomerate - but something about that feels off. It is possible that it is a fossil structure of some kind. Or something else entirely! But whatever it is, it is striking with it's bone-white/blood-red colour scheme.

UPDATE ... It has been suggested that this is an example of fossil fern - the woody stem mass rather than the leaves. I am no expert here but I can see some similarities in the structure. Bottom line though is that this is almost certainly not a thunderegg. I will leave it here though as it is from a thunderegg location and an interesting example of similar structures.
