Gray Butte
These are a very rare thunderegg, partly because it is an obscure location but also because the chance of finding a really nice specimen is apparently low. They have a nice rich patterned matrix that is almost like dark wood and much more complex that it at first appears. The agate is usually white and clear, sometimes forming leveling lines. They sometimes have an interesting exterior as well, covered with bumps and scales, said by some to look like a pinecone. Some therefore believe that they are best left uncut but I would venture to suggest that the few good specimens do make it worthwhile to hunt them down! They are the kind of thunderegg i love. Earthy, being the main descriptive word for me.
